The vineyard is the central axis of the productive activity of Vega Sicilia. Everything is born in the vineyard, and it is this that establishes the quality and uniqueness of the wine, and the posterity of the winery will be confirmed. The 210 hectares of the vineyard are divided into three varieties: Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of the 210 hectares, 140 hectares are used for the production of Valbuena and Único, and the rest is sent to Alión.
The entire vineyard is divided into 52 different wineries, depending on the grape variety, the age of the plants and the 19 taxonomies of soils that exist in the winery. The minimum age for the production of this plant is 10 years and the average age of production is 35 years.
For old vineyards such as Ontañón, which were planted in 1910 after the appearance of phylloxera, the plot was studied and analyzed, and finally it was determined that the clones that could produce the mother plant were selected, which is the winery's botanical heritage. .
The Vega Sicilia vineyard frame size is 3 x 1.5 m, a total of 2,222 plants can be planted per hectare and the average yield per grape is 1 to 1.5 kg. The preparation of the place is another factor that makes Vega Sicilia unique. Since disinfection is natural, the replanting process on the farm is longer than usual.
In the winery, biological and selective methods are used to discard products made by man in order to eliminate the nematodes existing in the soil that can damage the vine. For this, insecticidal plants are used, which require five years to clean the land. Keep in mind that there are a large number of nematodes in the soil where old vines are planted, so a thorough cleaning process must be carried out before removing old plants.
