The denomination of origin Ribera del Duero is framed in the Duero river basin in an area of more than 100 kilometers long on both banks of the river. It covers the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Soria and Segovia, occupying an area of more than 23,000 hectares, distributed among almost 300 wineries and more than 8,000 winegrowers.
Ribera del Duero wines represent approximately 2% of all wine production in Spain
The wine made with D.O. Ribera del Duero is mainly red wine, with a small percentage of rosé wine. The most characteristic grape variety in the area is Tempranillo or Tinta del País, which represents more than 90% of the harvest.
For a wine to be eligible to be sold under the D.O. Ribera del Duero, its production must contain at least 75% Tempranillo grape. In total, a minimum of 95% of the grapes must be Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot. The use of other grapes such as Garnacha and Albillo is also allowed.
